Why Weight and Health Are Not the Same Thing

What the scale can tell you — and what it can't

7 min

Weight is visible, easy to measure, and easy to compare. That's exactly why it gets treated as a full health verdict. But body weight cannot tell you about fitness, metabolic function, or body composition on its own.

Key Nuance
Two people can weigh exactly the same and have very different health profiles. Pursuing weight change through crash dieting or extreme restriction may move the scale while harming muscle, mood, sleep, and long-term stability — the opposite of the intended goal.
HealthLit Take
Weight is a visible number. Health is a larger system. Treating them as the same thing makes both medicine and self-understanding worse.
